We Are Tomato Geeks
There is simply nothing better than vine-ripened heirloom tomatoes picked fresh from your organic garden for Saturday’s tomato salad. Something about the variety of colors and shapes, their fascinating lineage, and the feeling of self accomplishment makes that salad the highlight of a busy week.
The best news is that growing heirlooms and hybrids is relatively easy – your garden can be so productive that you need to reach for your recipe book for what to do with the many pounds of tomatoes ripening in your garden every week, all summer long.
The problem is that apparently every horticulturist, master gardener, book author, grandfather, and YouTuber seems to have a different approach. What’s the best soil? When is the best time to start your seeds? When is the best time to transplant? Red plastic, black plastic, hay, or no ground cover? How to rid yourself of those pesky, evil looking tomato caterpillars? Prune or not? Fertilize or not? Should you really plant your tomatoes next to your carrots? When is a green tomato ripe?
Well, we’re geeks. Tomato Geeks, to be exact. Our goal is to help you start and manage a successful tomato garden. We have the chops to prove it – every year, we plant over thirty different plants and over twenty different varieties in our home garden. We pull a wheelbarrow of tomatoes from our garden every week.
Did we say we love tomatoes?
